Milo's Whole World Gourmet Pasta Sauces & Salad Dressings Are Made with Local Ingredients, Fresh Herbs & Wine!

Pasta sauces and salad dressings often have the same ingredients with slight variations.

When I heard that Jonathan Milo Leal put wine in his sauces and dressings, I just had to check it out for myself.

And am I glad I did!

I tried all of the dressings and pasta sauces, and can report that they are divine creations that are fresh and lively and yes, you can taste the wine - which as a wine lover, I am so pleased that the aromas and flavours were not cloaked in the process!

The sauces were exciting. I love that the Mediterranean Pinot Grigio has artichokes, olives and capers. I can't think of the last time I saw capers in a bottled sauce, but I think it's a genius idea! The Portobello Shiraz is suprisingly spritely and not at all heavy. I swooned when I tasted roasted squash in the Tuscan Merlot! Truly amazing! And who wouldn't be excited by the name alone? I think the Roasted Garlic Chianti is romantic and I just wish I'd had fresh clams for the pasta when I did this one. Next time... And the Four Herb Malbec Marinara has what I always look for in a red sauce - heart and soul - not to mention that it uses my very favourite wine. Oh boy!

The finely diced tomatoes give your dishes added texture, but know that these are not thick and hearty sauces. They are on the thinner side, which I have to say, was a really nice change from the usual suspects and coated the pasta without cloaking it.

And I don't know if you know this, but I eat half to a whole lettuce every night or two. I always have and I probably always will. So what dressing I choose is very important, as I'm going to be eating a lot of it. Vino de Milo dressings did not disappoint.

For someone to make an oil and vinegar dressing that you start having salad and raw veg just so that you can have the dressing - that's remarkable. And that's what Vino de Milo's Balsamic & Olive Oil Dressing with Chianti Wine is like. I drained that bottle in less than a week it was so good. I put it in pasta salad, on cold potatoes and anything I could get my hands on. This is the good stuff right here.

I got Earth, which is soft and flattering and match my green eyes. I love that it's made solely or 100% organic cotton and is made in a sweatshop-free environment. It hugs my curves and really is incredibly comfortable. I just want to wear it all the time.

Cooking a Gourmet Meal Just Got Easier Thanks to Olio & Spices!

I have had a catering company and cooked for friends and family numerous times, but I am by no means a gourmand.

I just throw stuff together and really, hope for the best.

I used it for stirfries, searing a roast, drizzling over pasta, making dressing and anytime I needed oil. It was absolutely delicious. So much so that while I cooked, I would tear off a piece of bread and dip it in the oil - I just couldn't resist.

When I was a young gal in my first apartment, I used bottled sauces for time and convenience. But the quality never lived up to what I could mix up on my own. Not with the More Than a Sauce line. This way surpass anything I could ever do. Wow. These all natural, kosher certified sauces allow you to add fantastically fresh and exciting flavours to your food, all with just a tip of the jar. I used the Red Wine Onion Sauce with a pot roast (mmm) and as a marinade for chicken. The complex but complementary flavours is so nuanced. Each bite you take is different than the next. And the Lemon & Mint Chili was fun. I used this on some halibut (lively) and on roasted vegetables (fantastic). But the mind-blower was the Pomegranate Teriyaki, with 30% all natural pomegranate juice. I marinated a pork tenderloin in it as well as some veal chops another night. Both times, my fella and I couldn't believe the flavours. Tangy, sweet and fruity, it is absolutely phenomenal. I can't recommend it enough...

And being a spice fiend, I was excited by their All Natural Spices, Blends and Rubs. Sometimes, in order to liven up a dish all you need is a little sprinkle of this and a pinch of that.
First of all, you should know that they come in these big, beautiful aluminum tins and everything is sealed in a bag for freshness, so you open the bag and then pour it into the large tin for ease of use. That way, you are getting absolutely the freshest herbs and spices possible. And yet, they have a shelf life of 2 years!

Even their Salt & Pepper blend is lovely because of its freshness. I stopped reaching for my old salt and pepper shakers long ago now that I have this beauty. The Ocean Blend mixes dried fresh-water seaweed with other herbs and spices that makes for an exciting - and healthy - addition to fish, seafood, soups and stews. You can use it as a rub or just season to taste. I am smitten by the Provence Blend, as it has everything you could need - oregano, basil, kosher salt, parsley, rosemary, bay leaves, thyme. Don't be surprised if you run out of this one quickly. You'll likely use it on everything as I did. The Tuscan Blend is also incredibly versatile. With onion, garlic, dried vegetables and dry herbs, it goes with everything. I put it in my meatloaf, chili, pasta sauce, soups, stuffing and my salad dressing mix. And to add a little kick to your cookin', the Cajun Blend is the perfect choice. The company calls it an "intense blend" but it's more than that- it's fascinating. Paprika, mustard seeds, basil, black pepper, coriander, cumin, rosemary create a completely unique and exciting flavour. I made a sweet potato gumbo yesterday and added it. It was what made the soup. I'm going to try it as a dry rub for chicken and tonight I'm making cutlets, so I'm going to add it to the breading. Mmm, I can't wait!

What I love about these is that they are all natural, so you don't have to worry about what's in them - it's all on the label and they are all real ingredients. And the fact that you can season your food and really taste the difference, make them stand out with just a shake or pour of these amazing products.

Handmade Treasures From Contexture, Yokomono Studio, Piano&Scene and TLC Bags

In hunting around for the perfect gifts, it seems I have been drawn to the handmade, the carefully sewn together or printed gifts that have been made with heart and soul and in many cases, found materials.

Perhaps it's that I can't really make anything myself, so I see the labour involved and think, how in the world do they do that?

Yokomono Studio

Japanese design always floors me with its simplicity and grace. There is such a modernity to it, yet it is steeped in rich history and culture.

And Yoko of Yokomono Studio is creating fantastic well-constructed pieces that feel both contemporary and authentically Japanese.

As you can see, the fabric used looks Japanese and simultaneously from both the old world and the one we currently live in.

I got the beautiful Polpolo Large Tissue Box Cover in Yellow Mustard.

I love that it's made to order - it makes it that much more special, don't you think?

And finally, I don't have to put up with those awful graphics on the tissue box.

The case is made from printed fabric (rayon/cotton) with interfece attached, solid fabric on the sides and inside (cotton twill) and an elastic strap on the bottom, allowing you to easily slide it over the tissue box and hiding it's carboard facade forever!

While you might just see this as one more accessory for the office, kitchen or living room, once you see it in person, you'll realize what a handcrafted gem this is and with each item, Yoko puts a little piece of herself.

So, you can imagine - here I've gone on and on about a tissue box cover and just wait until you get to the bags... Mmm!

Books mean as much to me as people. Certain books can transport me, change me and put me on a path that I never knew was possible.

And authors create those possibilities. How they do it, I don't know, but over my lifetime, I have come to treasure certain authors and books (and now I'm going to be one myself).

TLC Bags

I wrote about Tracy Crandall's TLC Bags about a year ago, but a lot has changed since then.

First of all, she has become incredibly successful and sells out at The One Of A Kind and other shows that she attends. Last OOAK, she sold out on the first day! It's no wonder - each bag is painstakingly handmade from found, reclaimed materials and each bag is completely original. You are your friend will never have exactly the same bag - which is just what you're looking for, right?

The other thing is that you can finally see Tracy's collection and order through and her website and etsy! Woo hoo!

She has a new bag - The Doctor's Bag - which I am honoured to be one of the few that have been made. It is a gorgeous, sumptuous treasure that is soft and feminine and yet, so practical (read: it holds everything I need to carry with me - which is A LOT!). Mine has a mossy green body with black trim and flap . It is handknit and crocheted and then felted to create" a dense, durable 'fabric'." A handmade pottery button adds pizazz to an otherwise ordinary function and the shoulder straps are made from a beautiful, gently worn (though it is perfect condition) sofr leather black belt that makes for ultra comfortable wear.

And then you get to the inside. One of the most special things about Tracy's bags is the inside - it is always as spectacular at the outside. Using designer fabric samples, she lines the bag in beautiful upholstery or clothing fabric that just knocks the wind out of you. Each time you open your bag, you'll say, "Wow!"

Each and every time.

The lining in mine is a beautiful large floral print that works for any season. And for that extra special touch, the inside pocket is done in a different fabric.
