Publisher & Editor - the knack

1. How long has the knack been around?

The Knack debuted in August 2006. At the time, there was not a lot of information about independent designers and smaller companies. I was frustrated by all the magazines covering the same five big names, so I started the knack to introduce people to really great products that they might not know about.

2. What kinds of products do you feature?

I review everything from Cosmetics, Clothing, Purses, Jewelry, Stationery, Eco Products, Skin Care, Tech and more. You can see a list of all the categories on the right hand side of the home page. I also like to work with small and new companies and designers to showcase their work. Hear that, Etsy folks? I'd love to feature more of you!

***All products written about on the knack are gifted by the companies themselves or a PR firm representing them.***

3. What sets the knack apart from the rest?

I do everything here from choosing the products to writing the reviews to designing and maintaining the website, so the vision has remained clear and consistent since the day I started.

I carefully select products and companies that I think stand out from the crowd or have created something that can really improve your life.

I post something each and every weekday and make sure that I include things that are accessible to people, both in proximity and price. You won't find any $5,000 dresses or jewelry that you have to inquire about the price. This is about bringing great products to you at prices that won't blow your budget. The knack is for real people, not rich people. I don't have that kind of money, so I don't expect my readers to either.

You always receive my honest opinions and I don't just review just anything that is sent to me.

As a published author and freelance journalist for over 20 years, I offer content that isn't just babble or some novice blogger trying to get attention. I write for a living and take it very seriously.  I hone and craft each piece and try to infuse each post with personality.

4. I want my product featured on the knack. What now?

The whole point of my blog is to go further than just copy down what's on a press release. So  I won't write about your product by you sending me only jpegs. That won't tell me what the leather feels like or how the cream smells.

If you wish to have your product featured here, please email me. If I'm interested, I'll let you know.

5. What is your return policy?

I do not return product.

6. I sent you my product, but I don't see the post on the site yet. When can I expect it?

Please know that because I am testing each and every product I receive, it takes time. Especially skincare, makeup and food. It is usually 6-8 weeks from time I receive the product to the post going live, unless otherwise specified.

7. Do companies pay you to review their products?

No, I receive no financial compensation for any of the reviews. I review the product in exchange for it being sent.

8. Do you have gift guides and special features?

I do the occasional gift guide for holidays (Valentine's, Christmas, etc.), as well as seasonal features like Back-to-School, Fall Must-Haves, etc.

9. What are your demographics?

My readers are:

- mainly women
- ages 18-38
- Most live in the US, then Canada.
- I have readers around the globe, as well. Check out the cool infographic.

10. What are your stats?

My blog has been identified as one of the top beauty-oriented blogs in Canada.

The knack has had 1,036,505 pageviews in total and 8-10K UVPM. What I think is great is that people actually shop for the products after reading the posts. This means that companies whose products are featured gain customers, in addition to viral marketing.

I posted 7 days a week up until March 2012. Now I post every weekday - with weekends, statutory holidays, and the occasional getaway off.

With a strong - and loyal - following on  Instagram and Twitter.

11. Do you have a media kit?

Not at this time.  The information above is what's included in a traditional kit.

12. What about copyrights?

I reserve all rights. Always.
