Action Day Notebooks and Planners Get the Job(s) Done!

I am of the belief that in order to accomplish things, you need to have systems in place that work for you.

The Action Day line of Notebooks and Planners are one of the best systems that you can have.

These wonderfully sturdy black hardcovered books will stand up to whatever test you put it through! Acid-free paper keeps your ink from bleeding through, the cover keeps all your notes protected and 160 pages means that you can actually write everything down that it is in your head and needs your attention without worrying about running out of room.

Each notebook and planner in the Action Day system has a specific purpose, so that it keeps you focused on that specific job or task. I think that this, along with their system of having specific places for you to list things (like fill-in-the-blanks), makes these notebooks and planners some of the best and well-thought products I've come across.

Take the Meeting Notebook, for example. On the left you have the page divided into 2 sections: Questions-Key Words-Ideas on the top and Conclusions-Actions on the bottom. On the right hand side, you have a blank page with a place to put the topic and date. This is where the brilliance of Action Day comes in - because you have labeled, laid-out areas in which to sort out your notes, you automatically can not only find what you need later, but you have organized yourself into actionable tasks while simply taking notes. Most of us have to take the time later to do that, and let's face it, it's not at all enjoyable having to go through it all again. This system completely erases any need to do all of that work again! Amazing, right?

At first glance, you might not think much of the Idea Notebook, but take another look, because you're going to love it! The topic line and numbered pages make going back for something so easy, but what makes this product revolutionary is the Table of Contents. Now finding anything you've written down is completely and easily retrievable. Your ideas are not just pie-in-the-sky notions anymore. These puppies are ready to soar, thanks to this little beauty!

Want to get a better handle on yourself and your habits? The Knowledge Notebook will helps. With a knowledge page on the right for you to take down your ideas and thoughts, you can think freely, but it's on the left where the magic takes place! There is a separate section for each of these: Start Doing, Stop Doing and Continue Doing. So now you can really assess where you need to improve, what you need to build on and what you are doing right. I've never seen something like this in paper form that isn't part of some journaling exercise. It's a brilliant way of getting a hold of not only what you're doing, but how you're doing it and what else you should be doing. Sigh. Brilliant.

If you're stuck on something, get the Problem Solving Notebook. This fantastic layout allows you to identify the problems, brainstorm solutions and then take action. I love that you just kind of have to fill in the blanks for this, so that your problems become clear instantly, whereas up until now, they have just been this gray cloud over you that you haven't been able to get a hold of. This is powerful stuff, folks!

My planner, as is yours I'm sure, is my life. It is where I list what I have to do and when to do it for. I juggle a ton of different areas in my life - daughter, fiancee, friend, neighbour, cook, writer, etc. - so I not only need a lot of room, I need it organized. That is why I absolutely love the Action Day Planners.

There are 2 sizes to choose from - 6 x 8 spiral bound and 8 x 11 bound - because Action Day knows you are either going to want it to be portable and go everywhere you go, or you'll want it to stay on your desk, where the action happens.

Each one had 5 sections - a diary section, a place to list your tasks to execute, goals and projects, projects delegated (I've never seen this in a planner before! FANFREAKINTASTIC!), and 35 pages for note taking.

One thing you've gotta know about these planners is that even if you previously favoured a day-per-page or a-day-per-2-pages, this system will win you over.

Share Your Music and TV with the i2i Stream!

My fella and I just celebrated our 8 year anniversary.

And despite living and working in a small one-bedroom apartment together, we still get along and actually often say, "I wish we could spend more time together."

Gross, I know, but true.

Although we don't get to travel often, when we do, I've come to look forward not only the sights and uninterrupted time away from our computers, but watching TV and listening to music using the i2i Stream.

Like 2 tween girls, we'll listen to L'il Mama or watch an episode of Community while in the air or on the train.

The way it works is that it streams audio wirelessly. So I get a unit as does he. You plug your headphones into the unit and then the unit goes into whatever audio input you're using - iPod, Archos, television, etc. That way we can both hear - in extreme high quality - the music and dialogue.

Which, let me tell you, makes the 5 1/2 hr. train ride to Ottawa bearable. And with a wireless range of over 30 feet and a battery life of over 7 hours, you can make any trip enjoyable. Watch your favourite movie instead of what is offered on the plane, listen to an audiobook (perhaps this one?!) or put on relaxation music to make the time pass seamlessly.

This is not the only way to use the i2i Stream, of course. You can make your laptop a virtual "wireless jukebox" and use them to listen to music or play video games in the comfort of your own home.

I just think if you're going to travel, do it in style and extreme comfort. And now we make sure that along with our passports, travel-size toiletries and inflatable pillows, we pack our i2i Stream. We couldn't live without it now.

Get Back to the Basics with the Fresh & Honest Cookbook

The subtitle of the book is of great importance, I think:

Food from the Farms of New England and the Kitchen of Henrietta's Table.

Written by Chef Peter Davis and Alexandra Hall, with stunning photos by Heath Robbins, this book is a real celebration of fresh and local food and the people who produce them - from the farmers to the chefs.

There is a New England Seasonal Table so you know what to get and when, and helpful notes for what to look for to get the freshest possible ingredients.

I love how rustic and hearty the dishes are. I mean, doesn't your mouth just water when you read Grit Cakes with Mushrooms? Oh my.

Of course seafood is highlighted throughout the book, including Finnan Haddie - a haddock and potatoes dish that looks delightful. But don't worry, meat lovers. They've got you covered too with homemade meatloaf (drool) and Venison Sausage with Smoked Bacon Sauerkraut.

I like that the recipes are simple - who needs complicated when you have fresh ingredients? - and that they are in an insanely big font (with big photos on every other page). It makes it so easy to navigate in the kitchen when you're not having to squint and crouch down in order to make out the next ingredient (oh oh, I'm getting old, aren't I?).

There are a ton of recipes for rubs and vinaigrettes, so you won't get bored making just the one or two and I like that there are recipes for things I'll likely make again and again like Mustard Pickles, Roasted Spicy Apples and hello, Pumpkin Bread.

Though it might seem too basic for you at home chefs, take a good look at it. It's just the thing you need. Fresh and honest ingredients and a chance to really perfect your craft.

Get Organized with the Order from Chaos Air Traffic Control Calendar

A number of people in my life are struggling with trying to get their lives sorted out.

I have been sending them clippings from magazines, recommending books on CD to listen to, but I think I've found a great solution to really help them turn things around with Liz Davenport's Order from Chaos Air Traffic Control Calendar.

What's significant about this system is that it is made for the 90% of people who are right-handed. Those other ringed-systems like Day Timer, Day Runner, Day at a Glance, etc. are made so that you are mostly writing on the left-hand side, thus you bang your hand into the rings, you can't write all the way to the end of the page and it's generally annoying which is why many people don't keep to their system.

And if you've been reading me over at Get Buttoned Up, you'll know I am all about getting a system that works for you.

Liz is an organizational expert whose book, Order From Chaos, goes through the 6 steps to being organized.

The reason this system is called the Air Traffic Control Calendar is because it is Step 2 of her system - "Write it all down in one place in a calendar format."

Smart lady.

With daily pages (two-pages-per-day) that allow you to keep your appointments ("Places to Go," Liz calls them) separate from your to-do list (I love that she calls these "Today's Options." It makes it all sound possible, doesn't it?)all on one page and corresponding notes on the other, you are bound to keep it all straight for once. The Jan-Dec monthly tabs gives you perspective on what's coming and a page marker with the Six Steps to Organization reminds you of how to stay on track.

I like that the pages are nice and wide, giving you lots of room to write, and that it's straightforward - black and white with little decoration - so that you can focus on the work that needs to be done.

And while Liz is a organization guru, she is not perfect. She calls Order from Chaos, "Organizing for the Disorganized, by the Disorganized. She's an Organized, Disorganized Person." I think that alone will put people at ease who have tried other methods and failed, who feel that can't live up to what others are doing.

Liz is one of us - she's just figured out how to organize the disorganization. And that's what makes her different. Her system is approachable and easy-to-follow. There's no tricks or gimmicks - just writing things down in one great place.

Liz Davenport is clearly out to change people's lives.

But for some people, that first step is the hardest.

I think that the Air Traffic Control Calendar is a great place to start if you're struggling to get organized and get things done.

And for once, you'll be able to write it all down with comfort and ease.

Make a Memorable Meal with Seasons in the Wine Country

For the last couple of decades, I have been cooking for friends and family as much as time allows, using recipes as inspiration more than something to follow.

Now that I am finally following recipes, I've learned - the hard way - that not all recipes turn out.

Play a Game Tonight - The Storymatic & What's a Dame to Do?

I know it's Oscar night, but the show is 4 hours long. That's a ton of time that you could be doing something else.

I love the idea of having a game night on Sundays. It's one of those old tyme pleasures that is just right for our frenetic lifestyles.

Here are 2 games that will get you started. And don't forget the snacks!

**The Storymatic**

Finally you get your chance to tell a really good story.

The Storymatic was developed by Brian Mooney, first while he was teaching at Marlboro College and then he put the finishing touches on it at The Putney School Summer Arts Program.

This little box holds a host of possibilities - along with 250 gold cards and 250 white cards!

Each gold card contains a character trait or occupation. Each white card contains a situation or object. Wild Cards contain instructions about where and when your story takes place, and how it must be told.

The basics of The Storymatic could not be easier. As described on the website:

"First, draw two gold cards. Then combine the information on these two cards to create your main character. For example, if you draw "surgeon" and "amateur boxer," your character is a surgeon who is also a boxer.

Next, draw one or two white cards. Let the information on the cards lead you into a story. If, for example, your cards say "box of teeth" and "pair of pants that don't fit right," then perhaps after a night in the ring Dr. Boxer always scans the floor of the ring for the teeth of his opponents, but maybe Dr. Boxer has put on some extra weight due to his long days at the hospital, causing him to slow down in the ring, and then...

And that's all there is to it."

Ah ha - there is a catch. Two, actually:

1. Your main character must change from the beginning of the story to the end of the story.

2. You cannot kill your main character.

You can see how this can lead to absolute fun and hilarity. Just check out the cards I pulled out:

Isn't that awesome? There's no way I could come up with something that good on my own!

And there is a accompanying booklet that gives you tons of ways to play with the cards. And not just for game night - for teachers, for illustrators. You can play a host of ways including "The 10-Sentence Collaborative Storymatic,""The Three-Minute Grab," and "The Dice-o-Matic."

**What's a Dame to Do?**

I know that it says that this is a game for women, but I played it with 2 fellas and we had a memorable night filled with laughter and surprisingly, revelations about one another!

The object of this board game is to correctly guess players' reactions to life's little "Dame Dilemmas."

So, each person takes a Hilarious Card, Score Folder and guessing chip. You are dealt 10 Reaction cards.

Let's say you pull this card:

"I'm standing up in a wedding and the bride-to-be is choosing a bridesmaid dress that's seriously unattractive, what's a dame to do?"

Out of your 10 reaction cards, you are considering:

- Act as if nothing happened.

- Say, "You've got to be kidding!"

- Use duct tape.

You can see where this is going. What's so much fun is trying to guess what you're opponents will do in these c-r-a-z-y situations.

My friend's reaction to:

"Trying to get to a seat at the movies I trip over a guy's big feet and end up in his lap, what's a dame to do?"

- Do something with a scarf.

Oh Darren, you are hilarious!

The site shows it being used on the treadmill and even as a music stand, but I am just darned grateful to have it to hold my many, many, many books.

My hands were getting awfully tired.
